A hard-fought victory over the 6th Ranked Oregon Ducks, despite a bogus pass interference call that lead to a touchdown, and giant craters in our secondary, makes my Sooner heart proud.

We'll have to be wary of revenge-minded ducks come September.

I read the following on www.holidaybowl.com and found it to be quite telling.

According to the NCAA, Oklahoma had the toughest schedule nationally this season. This was also one of the youngest teams in the history of Oklahoma football. Twelve true freshmen drew starting assignments this season and 22 players made their first career start.

And save the fiasco in Lubbock, we would be 8-3 right now. This has been a showcase of Bob Stoops' coaching ability, and I am PUMPED for this bowl game, and for the 2006 season!

Mike Gundy can't very well ask for a refund from the referees following the Sooners 42-14 slaughter of OSU, after all, they did their part to try and ensure an Oklahoma A&M victory by flagging the Sooners 16 times for 155 yards.

But when you only put out 190 yards total offense, that's not going to cut it, Mikey.

Was it just me, or did it look like he was going to cry on the sidelines after we recovered the fumble? His bottom lip stuck out in full pout mode, and him stomping around like a scolded toddler, I'm sure little brother Cale was so proud.

So now, the Sooners are 8-3, and 7-1 in Big 12 Play (Yes, I'm refusing to count the game at Texas Tech a loss) and we're headed to either the Holiday or Alamo Bowl.

I've heard mere rumor and speculation about the goings on in Lubbock. WWLS in Oklahoma City reports that one of their staff overheard an official state something to the effect of "If I overturn another touchdown, there's going to be a riot." Plus, I heard from an un-remembered source that Stoops officially called on Mike Leach to forfeit the game.

Nonetheless, we've had a decent season. Not up to Oklahoma standards, but a decent season anyway. After losing 15-16 starters, including 10 NFL players and a Heisman Trophy winner, I'm quite pleased with our overall effort, and have hope for the 2006 season.

When we lost to TCU at the beginning of the year, I feared the worse. I feared a Houston Nutt @Arkansas type season for our Sooners, and that was a thought I just couldn't bear.

But now, we've but together a bit of win streak, and are 6-3, bowl eligible, and ranked 25th in the BCS poll.

Wins over Texas Tech and Oklahoma A&M will put the icing on a season I thought we would be without cake. Our three losses, all to AP Top 25 teams, don't look nearly as bad now, especially considering, once again, that we lost TEN PLAYERS to the NFL, and 15 or 16 starters (according to which reports you read) to graduation.

This simply proves (again) that Bob Stoops is a fantastic coach, and we're darn lucky to have him.

I hope, pray, and actually believe we can go 8-3. 7-4 will be fine, and even 6-5 can be lived with, though at this point I don't see that happening.

That was a close one. We were stupid enough to leave when we were up by 8 with 2 min. to go. We did however make it back into the stadium to watch the two overtimes. What a game.

Nebraska is going to present a huge challenge. However, with the progress we are making I am optimistic.

Sorry I haven't been keeping up on the posting lately. I got really busy when I was in KC. The game was great after the first half. We just can't seem to get that offense together. There were some good things happening in the second half. I am going to the Baylor game Saturday night, so I hope that the improvements will continue and that we will win!!!

I made it in early this morning. I love it when a business trip falls right into place for me to have to see the Sooners play on the road. It seems like all the OU Fans must have left later then me, as I have slowly begun to see more and more as the day progresses.

The question is will we beat a bad Kansas team. I think we will and I hope we can do it convincingly. There are a lot of unanswered questions. Will the line make any improvement? Will Rhett Bomar live up to the billing. Will Jerry Bomar open his mouth again?...lol.. Will Paul Thompson make a good receiver? Will anyone in the secondary step up and play decent? This week is pivotal. Let's see if any of those questions get answered.

This is my first time in KC. I think it is a nice town, overall. We ate in Country Club Plaza at a place called Brio. They have the best lasagna that has ever touched my lips.

Depression setting in on the Sooner Nation after our first loss to the shorthorns in the last six years. However, I was reading the boards and came across this story posted by gyokie. Pretty funny stuff.

In a school just outside Houston, a first grade teacher explained
to her class that she is a Longhorn Fan. She asked her students to
raise hands if they are Longhorn fans too. Not really knowing what a
Longhorn fan is, but wanting to be liked by their teacher, their
hands all fly into the air.

However, there is one exception. A little boy named Timmy has not
gone along with the crowd. The teacher asks him why he has decided to
be different.

"Because I am not a Longhorn fan." says Timmy.

"Then," asks the teacher, "what are you?"

Timmy says "I am a proud Oklahoma Sooners fan!"

The teacher is a little perturbed now, her face slightly red.

She asks Timmy why he is a Sooners fan.

"Well, my Mom and Dad are Sooner fans so I'm a Sooner fan, too,"
Timmy responds.

The teacher is now angry. "That's no reason," she says loudly.

"What if your Mom was a moron, and your dad was an idiot?

Timmy smiled and said, "Then I'd be a Longhorns Fan."

I love being the underdog. We have nothing to lose and everything to gain. However, Texas has everything to lose and everything to gain. So that said this should be a true shootout. I think that the Sooner Defense will hold the run focused Texas offense in check. The big question is how does Rhett Bomar react to the atmosphere in Big D. If Rhett can settle down quick enough and play like he knows he can we should be able to put some good drives together.

Look for some sweet play calling by both teams. I expect to see the reverse again, as well as the double screen pass… Bomar to Thompson to Wilson.

Will this be the last year in the Cotton Bowl? I hear the AD from Texas talking on the Sports Animal and he sounded like he was ready to move the game to a home and home series. IMO there is something great about the game in Dallas, to lose it would be a big loss. We are talking about 100 years of this game. Come on Dallas step up and fix that Cotton Bowl up.

Let us not forget that until Mack and the shorthorns beat us we still have the bragging rights. I will grant you that this is the best chance that Brown has and will have in a while, but there is something to say for the way that Stoops has Mack by the balls. You never know what is going to happen in the Cotton Bowl, so buckle up and get ready for a ride. If for some reason we do leave Dallas with less than a victory… then and only then will I give it up to Texas.

No the sky is not falling Sooner fans!

If you watched the same game I did on Saturday evening, then you will have witnessed the light at the end of the tunnel as well. After a rocky start to the season, the Sooners are starting to mesh together and become a team right before our eyes. Rhett Bomar continued to be successful, and most importantly he protected the ball. Unfortunately Saturday Night's game did bring another injury to Adrian Peterson. Coach Stoops says he thinks AD will be fine and should play on Saturday in the Red River Shootout. Look for more rants on the RRS later in the week.

Critical Week

This is defiantly a critical week for the Sooners. I sure don't want to go into Dallas with a 1 and 3 record. A win over Kansas State would be great for the Big Red Machine, because I am afraid that this will be the year Mack Brown slides by Stoops.

I hope and I think that Stoops has prepared his team over the past two weeks. If we are going to see it now would be the time to see some significant progress take place.

A needed week off

I've been a little lazy with the posting after the disappointing beginning to the season. This week brings an off week for the Sooners to re-group. I am actually kind of excited about what I saw last Saturday. I really felt like Rhett Bomar showed that he has what it takes to be a big time college quarterbacks.

The offensive line struggled, but there were times that they did well in pass blocking. With two true freshmen, I would look for the O-line to only get better and better as we go through the season.

This week also brought the news that we will in fact be seeing Paul Thompson on the field in the very near future. Paul will be practicing at the Wide Receiver position, and may see some playing time as soon as the Kansas State game.

There is no doubt that there is a ton of talent on that squad. If and when everything begins to "click" then we should be in for some good times. I think that we may even find a way to beat the cowgirls, and tech or a&m.

Now that TCU has "upset" yet another big-time program in Utah, this should bode well for the Sooners power rankings should we manage to beat UCLA this Saturday. An SMU upset of Texas A&M would also be helpful, but it is much more doubtful.

But, as much as I want the Sooners to win, I never want it to happen at the expense of the rules, or a player's academic pursuits. So yes, Adrian, please go to class. The general student population already sees student-athletes as being coddled and given special treatment, there is no need to further the stereotype. And if you don't go to class, you shouldn't play.

AD was suspended from practice and could be benched for Saturday's game against UCLA. The suspension comes after Adrian missed several classes. Right now it looks like he will play on Saturday, but if he misses any more classes he could find himself sitting.

Sooner Victory!

A fantastic and lively bunch of fans were at West End today to cheer on our Sooners to Victory. As per usual, two drunken detractors tried to ruin our day by suddenly becoming the world's biggest Tulsa fans. It turned out one was a Texas fan and the other was just some idiot.

Peterson looked back in form for this game, but Bomar continues to fail in impressing anyone. Thompson didn't do much more last week, so I imagine it will be a neck-and-neck battle all season as to who gets the start.

The Sooners finally pulled most of the positions together in the second half, and they kept their cool and executed when the opportunities presente themselves.

A great day for the Sooners, and the Casablanca family!

Stoops accused of being racist

There is no doubt Coach (Stoops) was looking out for and likely under heavy pressure to find reason to dump Thompson from the Starring Role especially since there was a Good Young Boy standing there to fulfill the Dreams of all those Good Ole Boys who like their Quarterbacks white as hell.

Are you kidding me? I guess us Good Ole Boys like black Running backs, but not Quarterbacks. This guy is crazy! I wonder what all of the Sooners black athletes including Paul Thompson would say about it.

Stoops and Long have given the starting nod to Rhett Bomar for this week. Paul Thompson just didn't do enough to make himself the man. It will be interesting to see if Rhett can create the spark that the Sooners are in such desperate need of.

Rebuilding (understatment)

Okay so we all knew this would be a rebuilding year, but I don't think anyone expected the performance to be that poor. The Oklahoma Sooners started off the 2005 season with a loss to an unranked opponent Texas Christian. It does pain me to write that.

Even with the disappointment it was great to watch some college football. I love this time of year, and it will be interesting to see if the Sooners can prepare themselves to return to a BCS bowl within the next couple of years.

I think that Paul Thompson will retain the starting position for next week. He made some mistakes, but I wasn't impressed with Rhett Bomar either. There were some passes where you knew that if that had been Jason White throwing the ball it would have been a touchdown. You never know what you have until it's gone.

What is your take on the QB battle?

Rebuilding

Take a team that was one win shy of a National Title, subtract 15-16 starters, including 10 NFL caliber players and 1 Heisman Trophy winner. Add the X-factor of an uncertainty at the Quarterback position, and subtract 16. (Lewis Baker was pathetic.)

What you have then is a formula for disater.

I knew this would be a rebuiling year for our beloved Sooners, but I assumed it would be a Gibbs-like rebuild, with 2-3 losses to key opponents such as Texas and Oklahoma State. I certainly didn't expect, and still hope to avoid a Schellenberger or Blake-type rebuild. I was enrolled during the former, my wife the latter, so we know what these years feel like.

We've becomed spoiled, and those who hate the Sooner Nation are now poised and ready to dance and taunt us.

That is why is it imperative that we, the Sooner Nation, remain strong and supportive of our beloved Crimson and Cream. True fans remain loyal, thick or lean.

Plus, I think we can all agree that at the moment, and for the near future, even the Sooner Nation's priorities are aimed not at Norman, but rather 709 miles Southeast.

A starter at last.

Bob Stoops has officially named Paul Thompson the starting quarterback for the season opener.

Is it just me, or does it seem like Paul Thompson has been around FOREVER? Wasn't he competing with Nate Hybl a while back? Well, my fading memory aside, I'm glad to see we finally have a starter named, and a touted back-up in place. This is win-win for the Sooner Nation.

Now, to introduce myself to those who may not know who I am. I'm Nixon Casablanca of Nixon's Memoirs, and I'm an OU alum who now lives in Little Rock, Arkansas. It's not easy being a Sooner in Hog Country, but the Sooner Club of Central Arkansas and I make due. I made every watch party for every game last year, and I'm the only club member who can say that. That includes the Orange Bowl, where our largest crowd ever was heckled unmercifully by four drunken Arkansas fans, who actually went to schools like Central Arkansas, and Arkansas Tech. To me, this would be the equivalant of taking heat from a UCO or Tulsa alum.

I plan on making every watch party this year, as I now have Saturdays free, but I do work Friday overnight, so I may be a sleepy fan for some games. On the off chance we get a late afternoon or evening game this season, my wife and I hope to score tickets and drive to Norman for the game.

Defense impressive in Saturday's scrimmage

The Sooner secondary was all over the passses thrown by Paul Thompson and Rhett Bomar in Saturday afternoon's scrimmage. This is a good thing due to the fact that our secondary was completly un-sooneresqe last year. The Oklahoman's George Schroeder developed this argument in today's paper. He makes the following point.

In 1999, Stoops' first season, the Sooners snatched 18 interceptions.
Every year afterward, they grabbed at least 21.

In 2004 the Sooners pulled down a grand total of eight. Hopefully this weekends showing is a sign of things to come for the Sooner secondary.

Arguably the best quarterbacks in the storied history of Oklahoma sooner football, Jason White calls it quits after a courageous run at the NFL.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Former Heisman Trophy winner Jason White ended his professional career Thursday, citing his weak knees.

White, who had been competing for third quarterback with the Tennessee Titans, said he has the head and heart to play in the NFL. He doesn't have the knees.

A little on White's numbers...

White won the Heisman Trophy in 2003 and led Oklahoma to back-to-back BCS title games. He also won the Davey O’Brien award twice and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm title and is Oklahoma’s career passing leader with 7,922 yards and in touchdown passes with 81.

It is officially here. The start of the 2005 football season, and it couldn't come any sooner for me. This also means that today is the start of the long awaited battle for the starting quarterback position at OU. Who will emerge as the starting quarterback for the Sooners? I think that Rhett Bomar will be a great player in his time, but I have to give my nod to the experience that Paul Thompson brings to the table. I think that Paul will provide the type of leadership that can only come from the experience that he has. The rumor mill is grinding on the fact that the third player in the race, Tommy Grady will be transferring after two-a-days. Grady is a great player in his own right, but it will be hard for him to compete with Bomar and Thompson.

The ability level is so high among the three that any could likely step in and play well. The question mark lies in experience and leadership. Grady and Thompson have seen only late-game duty, while Bomar, one of the nation’s top-rated prospects in 2003, has yet to take a college snap.
